Aquagenic Urticaria

Aquagenic urticaria is also known as water urticaria is quite rare and is generally caused due to sensitivity of the skin to the water. Unlike other physical hives, release of histamine is not believed to be the real cause of such urticaria. They are uncommon and only one out of fifteen people get infected with it. Mostly young and adults suffer from such kind of hives. The hives generally last for as short duration of time from few minutes to hours and get cured itself.

Many experts believe the actual cause of hives is the additives and chemicals present in the natural water that includes chlorine, fluorine and other salts of the halogen family. Some people have sensitive skin that reacts with such chemicals and results in the development of aquagenic urticaria. They commonly develop after the body is in contact with water after swimming, taking bath for even a short duration of time with the development of hives in the form of red rashes and bumps that causes severe itching and discomfort.

It is usually diagnosed when the body is exposed to the water and the best prevention is to stay away from water having chemicals in the form of chlorides. But still if hives are caused on being exposed to water, some topical treatments in the form of steroids and anti-histamines can be taken. However there are no perfect medicines for the treatment of water urticaria and it recovers itself.

Antihistamines are taken just to provide instant relief from the symptoms such as itching and to reduce the red rashes from the body. Moreover antihistamines should not be used for a prolonged period of time as they cause severe side effects and damage the vital organs of your body. Taking precautions is the only remedies for aquagenic urticaria and those who are sensitive to it must avoid exposure to water as much as possible.
