Difference between Hives and Shingles : Causes , Symptoms and Treatment
As we all know that skin is the most sensitive part of the body which easily gets affected due to viral, fungal or bacterial infections and most of the time due to the allergic reactions. Hives and shingles are such conditions that affect the skin but there are certain dissimilarity between the causes, symptoms, durations and mode of treatment of these two dermatological conditions.
Both hives and shingles however look similar in appearance but there are some difference between them. Hives also known as urticaria are itchy red raised welts or papules caused by the release of histamine from the mast cells due to the allergic reactions. Opposed to it, Shingles is a viral infection caused by same virus that causes chicken pox. Once entered inside the body, the virus remain dormant within the nerve cells.
Hives can occur at any part of the body but usually it affects arms, palms, trunk and soles of feet. On the other hand, Shingles mostly occur on the back and chest. Secondly, hives can affect anyone regardless of the age but shingles is mostly common in adults and people having weak immune system due to stress, injuries or other medical conditions.

Symptoms and duration of hives and shingles are also different. Hives are raised welts of varying sizes accompanied by intense itching and burning sensation. In severe case, it may leads to the swelling of the surrounding tissues whereas shingles appear as red blistering rash which causes tingling pain, burning and extreme sensitivity on the affected area of skin. Hives usually disappear within six weeks however in case of chronic hives it may lasts for longer duration. Compared to that, shingles in most cases disappears only within few weeks.
Prevention and Treatment for Hives and Shingles
